Summary: A Town Like Alice is a 1950 novel by Nevil Shute about Jean Paget, an Englishwoman who survives harrowing experiences as a Japanese prisoner of war in Malaya during WWII. After the war, she inherits a fortune and moves to Australia to find Joe Harmon, an Australian soldier she befriended in captivity. Using her inheritance, she works to improve a small outback community, transforming it into a prosperous "town like Alice Springs," while also building a life with Joe.
