In order to verify previous claims and better understand intonation in Eastern Cham, we recorded read sentences and interviews in Phan Rang in July 2012. These acoustic data were analyzed with Praat. A statistical analysis was then conducted in SPSS 20 to determine the effect of a set of categorical dependant variables (such as functions, register, number of syllables of those final particles) on a number of acoustic indicators (such as intensity, f0 and duration). This research addresses the question of the interaction between intonation and register and formalizes it within auto segmental-metrical phonology.

Renovation to capacity-oriented courses is still facing many difficulties in tertiary education in Vietnam. Besides, in the context of comprehensive renovation to Vietnam’s higher education, from curriculum to assessment methods, assessment competence has a more critical role to play in teacher education programs. This article aims to present the development of a Language Assessment Course at the University of Languages and International Studies - Vietnam National University, from a knowledge and skill-based module into a competence-based course. Findings from the survey on this new-designed course among student attendees are also summarized.
