Realities show that many teachers often comment on students’ errors and want to correct them rather than praising or rewarding students’ achievements. If teachers pay due attention to giving praises as well as rewards, and have appropriate corresponding techniques, they can highly motivate learners, and accordingly ensure a higher success in students’ academic quality. However, the question is whether monotonous repetition of “Good!”, “Well done!” is encouraging enough, and whether the most costly reward always brings the best outcome. This article provides an answer to these questions by distinguishing between a good way of praising and a bad one. Some techniques in giving an effective praise are also embedded. At the same time, the article highlights different views on using rewards in teaching and suggests guidelines for deciding how to best use rewards in motivating learners.
