Previous studies found that classifier systems of Chinese and Japanese share similarities and differences when enumerating objects. To investigate how Chinese-Japanese speakers process semantically- similar or-different homographic classifiers during the comprehension of Japanese noun phrases, a priming paradigm was. conducted in two experiments. In Experiment 1, participants’ performances on grammatical decision tasks decreased with increasing stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) when nouns with the same classifier in Chinese and Japanese were used as priming words, showing a cross-linguistic facilitation effect. In Experiment 2, nouns with different classifiers in both languages were used as priming words. In this case, participants’ performances tended to increase with increasing SOA while priming words were processed sufficiently; hence a cross-linguistic interference effect was found. The data of the two experiments suggested that the lexical access of Japanese classifiers is a result of the resonance and co-activation between nouns and classifiers in both languages; meanwhile, similarities and differences of the two classifier systems might exert different influences on the process of Chinese-Japanese speakers’ lexical access of classifiers.

汉英双语者语义饱和效应研究 = On the semantic satiation of Chinese-English bilinguals. / ZHANG Jijia; LIU Xiang; WANG Yue. // Foreign language teaching and research. 2014, Vol. 46, No.3. // 外语教学与研究 2014 第46.第3

The semantic priming paradigm and category judgment task were used to investigate the semantic satiation of intra-and inter-language of Chinese-English bilinguals. The results show that(1)the semantic satiation effect of the first language is stable;(2)for Chinese-English bilinguals, overly repeated words do not trigger semantic satiation under total second language circumstances;(3)semantic satiation doesnt exist in any cross-language semantic processing conditions for Chinese-English bilinguals;however, under Chinese-to-English circumstances, the influence from overly repeated cues is also regulated by the bilingualsproficiency on the second language:over repetition inhibits the semantic processing for proficient bilinguals but facilitates the lessproficient. The results of this study support the theory that the semantic satiation is a loss of association between the lexical items and meanings.
