// 外语教学与研究 2013, 第45卷.第2期 2013.tr. 227-240. Previous studies found that classifier systems of Chinese and Japanese share similarities and differences when enumerating objects. To investigate how Chinese-Japanese speakers process semantically- similar or-different homographic classifiers during the comprehension of Japanese noun phrases, a priming paradigm was. conducted in two experiments. In Experiment 1, participants’ performances on grammatical decision tasks decreased with increasing stimulus onset asynchrony (SOA) when nouns with the same classifier in Chinese and Japanese were used as priming words, showing a cross-linguistic facilitation effect. In Experiment 2, nouns with different classifiers in both languages were used as priming words. In this case, participants’ performances tended to increase with increasing SOA while priming words were processed sufficiently; hence a cross-linguistic interference effect was found. The data of the two experiments suggested that the lexical access of Japanese classifiers is a result of the resonance and co-activation between nouns and classifiers in both languages; meanwhile, similarities and differences of the two classifier systems might exert different influences on the process of Chinese-Japanese speakers’ lexical access of classifiers.
