The process of acquiring a new language by second language learners receives a lot of attention from linguists and educators. One of the most frequent questions is whether second language should be taught explicitly or whether an adult learner can learn a new language via implicit learning mechanisms (DeKeyser, 2003). Different from first language acquisition is believed to depend on both implicit and explicit learning. Nevertheless, the extent to which explicit and implicit learning influences and supports second language proficiency is still controversial. This study, therefor, provides a comparison between implicit and explicit learning and knowledge and discusses the pedagogic benefits of each type of learning and as well as this comparison.
