An examination of the way of thinking and living espoused by Daisuke Nagai, the protagonist of Soseki Natsume’s “And Then”, brings into focus various issues brought about by Japan’s cultural enlightenment in the Meiji period, during which the country underwent rapid modernization. Although Daisuke was one of the university-educated elites, he did not seek employment and was content to live off the assets of his father. He rationalized his situation by claiming that working people throughout the world toil their time away, thereby losing the spiritual freedom to think. Daisuke’s thoughts turned specifically to his father Toku, his elder brother Seigo, and to such people as his friend Hiraoka. Nevertheless, after Daisuke attempted to steal Hiraoka’s wife Michiyo, he was cut off financially by his infuriated father, and found himself in the position of needing to find a job. At that time, it became clear that the cultural criticism that arouse in the novel could only have been conceived from the condescending attitudes of critics and spectators. Based on this revelation, this article attempts to elucidate the conditions and problems associated with cultural enlightenment in modern Japan by deciphering Daisuke’s thoughts and analyzing his relationships with those around him.
