The aim this paper is to address the question “What are the research areas and research directions in ELF?” Realizing that this question is closely related to the question, “What does is mean to know a foreign language?” the paper attempts to answer the question by examining different model (or ways) of conceptualizing the notion of “what is means to know a foreign language ”: the structuralist model as developed by Fries, the generative model as developed by Canale and Swain, the skill-based model, and the model of “what it means to know a foreign language syllabus/course design. The final section summarizes the constitute the concept of “what it means to know a foreign language” and offers some implications it has for research in foreign language teaching and learning.
