When talking about animal world, people often mention the twelve-animal circle in which each animal symbolizes a lunar year and is believed to have a close relationship with a person’s year of birth and his/her personality. Through working and exploring the animal world, our forefather drew on a rule that animals eating meat are fierce while animals eating grass are gentle. Of the twelve animals in the twelve-animal circle, goat symbolizes luck and happiness. For a long time, goat has been chosen to often sacrificies to deity. Studying the letter 羊 (goat) from the viewpoint of language and culture helps highlight the layers of meanings as well as its role of being the head set forming the letter and the word. The analysis has pointed out our forefather’s cognitive characteristics concerning this grass eating animal (goat) and its position in various aspects of life such as food, religion, morality and aesthetic value.
