Structure showing is commonly used in modern Cantonses. However, whether has function of showing degree or not, and if yes, how shows degree, what grammatical role of in the structure, what is its meaning in the structure and so on. Academics have told different opinions so far. Studying the function and meaning of and in the structure showing degree does not merely help determining its semantics, but also contributing to teaching modern Cantonese.

As defined, an adverb modifies a verb or an adjective; however, in reality, it is commonly used to modify anoun. We will analyze this special use based on the meaning of the noun to find out the most frequently-used adverbs as modifiers of nouns. The nouns to be researched include nouns of time and space, classification nouns, quantity nouns or nouns whose grammatical functions have been changed under certain circumstances.
