Applying the nomination-cognition theory in linguistics, the article points out the distinctions in names and ways of naming fishes in Dong Thap Muoi in comparison to those of the official Vietnamese language. These distinctions reflect dissimilarities in dividing the real world and selecting objects’ characteristics; thus indicating different cultural features.

Based on the survey results and the analysis of the fishery words in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces, the article identifies 12 types of common naming anf cognitive characteristics reflected in the name of the words. The article also show that, through the names, the imagines of the familiar fishing work have become symbolic imagines for many psychological characteristics and the spiritual life of coastal people in Thanh Hoa, Nghe An and Ha Tinh provinces.
