The paper deals with the role of native language in foreign language acqusition. Theoretical foundation is mentioned through a review of two contrasting views on the roles of native languages in foriegn language classes. With Sociolinguistics methods, through the case study in the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, some different issues of native language in a foreign language class are discussed with quantitative evidences. The issues of the activities of native language uses, the reasons for of the native language uses and the attitude of teaches and students to the alternative code-swithching are discussed in detail.

The paper examines how VOA Special English program helps first – year English majors at Quy Nhon University improve their speaking skill and investigates their attiude towards the use of this program in speaking classes.The study draws on the theories of behaviorism and text- based language teaching with the deployment of qualitative and qualitative and quantitative methods for the data analysis. The findings show that the participants benefited from VOA SE; however, some considerations should be taken into account if this program is added to the speaking syllabus.
