The paper deals with the role of native language in foreign language acqusition. Theoretical foundation is mentioned through a review of two contrasting views on the roles of native languages in foriegn language classes. With Sociolinguistics methods, through the case study in the University of Social Sciences and Humanities, some different issues of native language in a foreign language class are discussed with quantitative evidences. The issues of the activities of native language uses, the reasons for of the native language uses and the attitude of teaches and students to the alternative code-swithching are discussed in detail.

Mother tongue is defined by traditional linguistics from three dimensions,i. e. language acquisition,national identity and language use. Thereby it is called first language,native language and dominant language accordingly. However,in a bilingual or multilingual environment,the definitions are faced with various challenges. It is proposed that mother tongue,as an independent connotative concept,is a product affected by both subjective and objective factors. It serves as an objective basis for children’s language acquisition and contains both individual and community identities. Due to these two identities,it is common that some bilinguals have two mother tongues. It is argued that re-defining mother tongue will shed significant light onthe acquisition,planning,human rights,maintenance and education of mother tongue in a bilingual or multilingual environment.

On the basis of analyzing a typical case of bilingual education in Chinese context, the author proposes that it is important to highlight the position and function of the native language in bilingual education, so as to grasp the connotation of bilingual education.
