In this research, we use the functional perspective to examine idioms and proverbs with regards to the following points 1) contextual meanings of idioms and proverbs with a consideration of the speaker’s purposes; 2) the writer’s creation in the structure of idioms, proverbs and the newly created meanings of idioms and proverbs; 3) the writer’s style characteristics in the uses of idioms and in stories and novels published after 1975.
