In Vietnamese, trái, ngược, đổi, and bù are verbs, can play a central role ò the predicate, and can occur affter other verbs as an adjunct (excluding “đổi”). Trái lại, ngược lại, đổi lại, and bù lại can operate as contrastive conjuncts , indicating an oppsition or differentce betwwen the preceding event and the following event from the perspective of the speaker. The speaker uses them to signal that the following event occur in circumstances incompatible with the previous event. However, the absence of this kind of conjunct does not harm the contents of the utterance, because in fact the incompatibility between the events was secured by the meanings of the sentences or/ and by adversative conjunctions nhưng, mà, còn. Thus in terms of the semantics, these contrative conjunsts can be regarded as idioms of subjective modality.
