Apart from being important language units which demonstrate a person’s efficiency in language use, idiom also express cultural characteristics of a country. Therefore, it is necessary for foreign language learners to acquire cultural knomledge in order to use idiom effectively. In this research, the author aims to find out some similarities and differences Vietnamese and English culture revealed thruogh idiomatic expressions to help learners use idioms successfully in communication. Idioms with animal expressions are the main data in this paper as they are quite popular in our daily life. These idioms were collected, compared and synthesized to find out similar and different meanings of animal expressions in English and Vietnamese which results from cultural charcteristics. This paper also mentions some idioms with equivalent meanings but are expressed in different ways in these two languages.

This article has the goal of surveying the gratitude mode in Russian and Vietnamese, as; a first step to describe the structure of this behavior in the languages in order to collate them to point out the similarities and differences between two languages, contribute to improve the efficiency of teaching and studying Russian and Vietnamese as foreign language, assist learner to avoid the mistake made by language - culture crossing in communication.

Idioms, as a part of a language, are commonly used in not only daily communication but also literature and considered a valuable heritage. Therefore, idioms should be studied from different perspectives. In order to understand and use idioms properly, we need to be aware of not only their grammatical forms but also the elements of psychology, religion, culture and contexts of use. This study examines simile-based idiomatic expressions on the basis of linguistic and cultural aspects of English and Vietnamese. In doing that, the researchers attempt to find out the similarities and differences their use in fourteen English and Vietnamese short stories and novels. The findings are expected to help readers, to a certain extent, use idiomatic expressions properly in particular communicative situations.
