Basing on the framework of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) suggested by Fairclough (1989), the syntactic structures of Vietnamese socio-political slogans are analyzed following the principles of Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) to unveil the ideologies, thoughts and other social practices reflected in the linguistic uses within Vietnamese social-political slogans.

This article analyzes the speech by the President of the United States, Barack Obama on the death of Osama Bin Laden on May 1st,2011 from critical discourse analysis viewpoints in order to find out the ideology embedded in the discourse, and uncovere the relationship between language and power. As a president and a commander-in-chief, when giving this announcement, President Obama remarked the huge achievement in the fight against terrorism and asserted that the Americans would never forget their loss on September 11th and forever hand in hand do whatever it takes to prevent another attack on their shores.

The paper presents an analysis of Vietnamese socio-political slogans from the perspective of Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) which proposes theoretical foundation for the analysis of lexical, syntactic and textual characteristics of discourse. Within the scope of this paper, we use the framework of CDA suggested by Fairclough (1989) to analyze lexical characteristics of 130 Vietnamese socio-political slogans, following the principles of Halliday’s Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) to unveil the ideologies, thoughts and other social practices reflected in the linguistic uses.
