Formation of any geographical name (place name) is strongly influenced by the historical, cultural and linguistic characteristics of the place it belongs to and thus, can reveal valuable information of those characteristics. The formations of the geographical names in Thanh Hoa are not an exception. Characteristics of a dialect transition zone are clearly shown in many aspects of geographical names in Thanh Hoa, such as the language origin, phonetic characteristics, vocabulary feature… Accordingly, Thanh Hoa geographical names have created a vivid picture of Thanh Hoa dialects.

Geographical names are the names of geographical object. The evolution in the inner of each name has turned geographical names into the sediment which has preserved the information on nature, history, culture and language. In Thanh Hoa, the vestiges of the hero Le Loi and Lam Son insurrection have remained in many geographical names. This article which has investigated some geographical names related to the hero and the insurrection will make additional contribution to the vision of Lam Son cultural space in Thanh Hoa province.
