Coherence in texts is the result of many factors, represented by cohesion and relations of sentences and paragraphs in a paper. Thanks to coherence, readers can easily absorb the ideas writers want to convey. To achieve coherence, a writer should write comprehensible and logical sentences and paragraphs to express a common topic. Coherence is presented in all sorts of writing, including letter of complaint – a typical type of business correspondence. To maximize the effectiveness, letters of complaint should present coherence through relations between words in a sentence, topic of sentences, logical order or arguments among sentences.

Coherence is an indispensable requirement for all types of texts. If the spoken or written content is not presented coherently, effective communication will not be achieved, even this may cause misinterpretation or misunderstanding. Therefore, if a business contract is not written clearly and coherently, it will lead to economic and legal risks. However, coherence is not an easy to grasp. That is the reason why in this research we focused on studying coherence through discourse relations in English business contracts in a hope that this research will help those who are interested in this issue overcome the fundamental difficulties to succeed when writing and translating English business contracts.
