// Tạp chí Khoa học Ngoại ngữ Số 43/2015 Hà Nội : Đại học Hà Nội, 2015tr. 79-90 On the basis of traditional concepts on idioms, this article collates some of the modern views on idiomatic vocabulary. The authors argue that foreign language teaching and learning, in whatever scope, can be regarded as a cross-cultural process where idioms play a significant role. Especially in foreign language teaching in Vietnam today, the teaching and learning take place in the context of exchange, integration, interplay and even conflict of cultures. It can be called a multicultural environment. In this paper, the authors highlight advantages of idioms, when they are seen as a unit of teaching, as well as difficulties in teaching and learning idioms at schools in Vietnam. To improve the quality of foreign language teaching in our country, this paper also makes some suggestions for the types of language practice exercises in general and for idiom teaching and learning in particular to achieve the desired outcome.
