Communication and representation involve an ensemble of modes,for example,verbal expressions,gestures,gaze and facial expressions.However,previous studies only explored the verbal mode and disregarded other modes in behaviour.Recent studies such as Hindmarsh and Heath(2000),Moore(2008) and Eriksson(2009) have adopted a multimodal approach to referring behaviour,analyzing both the verbal and non-verbal means in the practice,but these studies are not systematic in analyzing gestures.
