This paper discusses the different approaches to conversion in English, that is, the traditional approach with the zero-derivation theory in formal linguistics and the approach with the metonymy theory in cognitive linguistics. In general, both of the approaches have advantages and disadvantages. Therefore, we need to take their advantages in explaining, teaching and researching this linguistic common but quite diverse and complex phenomenon.

. This paper sets out some linguistic characteristics of metonymy and elucidates synecdoche as a variant of metonymy, wich presents relations between the part and the whole. A short glossary of metonymic units frequenly used in western and Vietnamese periodicals is shown after the analysis of metonymy and synecdoche as a subclass of metonymy.

With the Chinese emotional culture system as its main resource and traditional Chinese short stories such as Stories to Caution the World and their English versions as data, this study draws on metaphtonymy from cognitive linguistics to examine the linguistic expression of human emotions, with a view to exploring into the Chinese nation’s philosophical thinking and historical-cultural ingredients knitted into these stories. It meanwhile delves into the transmission processes and effects. In addition, Chinese and Western styles of emotion transmission are compared and con¬trasted and their cognitive, ethnic and cultural motives discussed.
