This paper makes synchronic and diachronic studies on the usage of he(和), yu(与),tong(同),gen(跟).A major finding based on the investigation is that he(和)is mainly used as a conjunction;yu(与)can be used as a preposition and a conjunction,showing no big differences in terms of frequency;with a variety of usage,tong(同)more likely works as a preposition,and gen(跟)usually functions as a preposition as well,which holds evident superiority in its occurrence.From the perspective of synchronic level,heis relatively stable,while yu,tongand genare more active,various usages indicating different trends within a period of time.
