Polysemy is a common phenomenon in human language. The extension of word meanings is not irregular or arbitrary, instead there are innate laws to follow. Wind is a common natural phenomenon. For this natural phenomenon people have very rich experience. Wind is defined as the air moving from an area of gigh pressure to an area of low pressure. Wind as the source domain is mapped onto different target domains which create the other senses of it. From the perspective of cognitive linuistics, pototype theory is used to analyze the semantic structure of the Gió (wind) in Vietnamese with a purpose to give a more objective and systematic interpretation to the origin and development of its prototypical sense and other derived senses.
