The paper presents the three major milestones that Chinese as a Second Language(CSL)education has achieved recently in Hong Kong:(1)CSL education has been made compulsory in international schools;(2)the first CSL curriculum and policy has been implemented for ethnic minority students,and(3)the certified vocational CSL courses have been provided for CSL students for the first time.With the expansion of the educational scale in schools,and the development of curriculums and policies,CSL in Hong Kong is also facing more significant challenges.Based on in-depth observations,the paper provides five practical suggestions on the future development of CSL education in international schools,local schools and vocational schools there.It has also stressed the special characteristics of CSL teaching and learning,which is to ensure a long-term and sustainable development of CSL education in Hong Kong

This article discusses the current situation of Chinese language teaching in Hong Kong.From analyzing the characteristics of Chinese language,curriculum setting,teaching materials and socio-cultural environment,the article discusses the learning difficulties of students of ethnic-minorities(SEMs)in Hong Kong.Combining the theory and practice of language learning and teaching,the authors propose relative strategies to improve Chinese language learning of SEMs in government,schools and society,in order to arouse discussion with both the academia and the education sector.
