Elementary education played an important role in ensuring the survival and development of the Communist Party of China(CPC) base areas during the Anti-Japanese War. The teaching staff is undoubtedly at the core of elementary education. Required to be professional, the teachers should be politically more correct when viewed from the unique context of the CPC base areas. Necessary to the revolutionary cause is the enlightenment and education of the rural youth so that they would take part in. Unfortunately, not all rural youth were enthusiastic of receiving an education, making the mobilization of students a challenging task for the Party. In addition, education policy in the base areas had to be modified on occasions,to accommodate the conflicting demands of pedagogy, revolutionary ideals and the real life in rural areas. Seen in this light, education was no different from other departments and professions in the base areas, being a functioning part in the machine of revolution. Being subordinated to the revolution meant that education was promoted only in service ofrevolution. This unique mission, coupled with the reality in the base areas, gave rise to a peculiar brand of elementary education, which was in turn characterized by enduring conflict between professionalism and politics.
