On the basis of the literature review,this paper examines the internal syntactic structure of the construction do so and its implications on the projection of VPs in general.It is argued that doin the construction is an overt reflex of a light verb v,with so as the pro-form for its lexical VP complement.It is just so but not do so as a whole that replaces the lexical VP.It is further shown that do so is compatible with unaccusative antecedents,suggesting the inadequacy of the claim that special instances of the light verb do are in fact transitive v*.Empirical evidence is provided for the existence of both transitive light verb v*and intransitive light verb v.Such evidence for both v*and v projections is of great significance for claiming the universality of phrase structures.
