动宾倒置复合词研究述评 = A Critical Review on the Inverted Verb-Object Compounds / Ying Xue-feng; Zhejiang International Studies University

Concerning the generation of the inverted verb-object compounds,there are three mainstream explanations:generative grammar,prosodic grammar and interactive rule between prosody,syntax and semantics.The latter two receive even more attention,though each with its own merits and demerits.The prosodic grammar has strict rules,which account for the existence of multiple exceptions.The interactive rule between prosody,syntax and semantics does not have much binding power and is quite flexible.However,with inverted verb-object compounds actually being modifier-head bounded structures,this rule may shed some new light on the interactive features and restrictions between the syntax,prosody,semantics and pragmatics of the structure

While prosodic grammar is the interface between prosody and grammar inEnglish,in Chinese it is acomponent part of grammar,which has zi 字(word-syllable)rather than word as the basic unit.Azi is a monosyllable and usually carries a tone and a meaning.While the rise and fall in rhythm is shown in sentence intonation in English,it is shown in the tones of word-syllables in Chinese.While the pause and transition in rhythm is decided by word stress in English,it is decided by the degree of syllable combination tightness in Chinese.To keep a well rhythm in Chinese it is important to control the number of word-syllables in a sentence,and the position of pauses involves a comprehensive consideration of prosodic,syntactic,semantic and pragmatic factors simultaneously.In Chinese there is no word stress but only discourse accent.The flexibility of Chinese rhythm results from the free variation of syllable combination tightness,which reflects in a skewed relation the combination tightness in meaning and syntactic structure.Therefore,prosodic means byitself is an important grammatical means in Chinese
