This paper reports two experiments that investigate the impact of working memory and second language proficiency on cross-language priming effects.Results show that(1)L2proficiency significantly impacts the cross-language priming from L1to L2,i.e.,higher proficiency in L2 tends to inhibit the priming force of L1syntactic representation more as has been revealed by previous studies,and that(2)the impact of L2proficiency(only when it reaches certain thresholds) on the priming is mediated by L1and L2working memories.To be more specific,when L2proficiency is higher than a certain threshold,better L2working memory can inhibit the priming force of L1syntactic representation;however,when L2proficiency is lower than a certain threshold, better L1working memory can strengthen the priming force of L1syntactic representation.
