In this paper, 12 Vietnamese textbooks are investigated in such aspects as (1) overall structure of the textbook; (2) structure of units; (3) content of units in terms of linguistic knowledge as phonetic, vocabulary, and grammar; (4) content of units in terms of language skills such as speaking, listening, reading and writing. Following results of investigation, some comments on their advantages and disadvantages are offered, and some ideas of compilation of Vietnamese textbooks are proposed.
