“Những” and “các” are two grammatical elements that denote the plural in Vietnamese noun phrases. In this paper, they are reviewed based on the 42 letters of Catholics from XVIIth to XlXth centuries. The study from the diachronic aspect can help clarify the similarities and differences between “những” and “các” which have been well studied from the synchronic aspect by Vietnamese linguists. It also helps highlight the change trends in lexical combinations and grammatical meanings.

The clearest characteristics of character’s language in the novel of Chu Lai is the system of colloquial words appearing repeatedly, with word frequency used many times in dialogues (personal pronouns, obscene words, abusing words). The dialogue with colloquial words contributed to creation of the characteristics of the soldier and the style ot writer in works about the soldier.

Applying the nomination-cognition theory in linguistics, the article points out the distinctions in names and ways of naming fishes in Dong Thap Muoi in comparison to those of the official Vietnamese language. These distinctions reflect dissimilarities in dividing the real world and selecting objects’ characteristics; thus indicating different cultural features.
