Alexandre De Rhodes’s Vietnamese-Portuguese-Latin Dictionary (The Dictionarium Annamiticum Lusitanum Et Latinum) was published in the mid of the seventeenth century. With the number of rich collection of words and the Latin alphabet system used to record Vietnamese sounds, the dictionary has become an indispensable material in the study of historical Vietnamese. With the dialects layering reflected in the dictionary we may determine that at the time when this dictionary was published the Cochin dialect (dialect of the central Vietnam now) had been formed and flourished within Vietnamese. With the dialects reflected in the dictionary we have a valuable resource to help identify a number of phonetic and word phenomena of the earlier eras with ease and certainty.
