Using the Corpus of Contemporary American English as the source data, this paper adopts collostructional analysis(Stefanowitsch & Gries 2003; Gries & Stefanowitsch 2004) to measure the collostructional strengths between English adjectives and the "amplifier + adjective" construction. Cluster analysis is also used to explore a new classification of English amplifiers. Besides, correspondence analysis is utilized to visualize the semantic distances in a set of maximizers. With these analyses, the paper obtains three main findings: 1) collostructional analysis is largely effective in measuring the association strengths between lexemes and the grammatical constructions associated with them; 2) cluster analysis shows that there does exist a distinction between maximizers and boosters, but the boundary is not clear-cut, as some traditional boosters have already entered the category of maximizers. In addition, such an analysis can measure the degree of similarity between amplifiers of the same group and that of dissimilarity between different groups; 3) the six typical near-synonymous maximizers, i.e. absolutely, completely, entirely, perfectly, totally and utterly, carry nuances of difference in their collocations with adjectives, and correspondence analysis can graphically reflect this by mapping the semantic difference onto the two-dimensional space distances.
