Về chiến lược dịch các từ mang đặc trưng văn hóa từ tiếng Việt sang tiếng Anh./ Nguyễn Văn Trào
// Ngôn ngữ. 2014, Số 4 (299). 2014tr. 33-44. Culturally-entrenched words are lexical items grounded in one specific culture; they refer to specific conceptualizations of the world which are unique to a given cultural community. These lexical units are quite problematic not only from the viewpoint of semantic theory, but also from an applied perspective, i.e., how to translate them into other languages. Without the appropriate knowledge about their culture groundings, cultural words are bound to be misinterpreted and, therefore, misused. This paper aims to provide an overview of the most feasible strategies proposed by scholars in the discipline of translatology in rendering the culture-specific items from one language to another. A further goal of the paper is to analyze a group of funeral-related terms in Vietnamese to identify if they are effectively translated into English.

Xác lập quy trình dịch ẩn dụ từ tiếng Anh sang tiếng Việt (Trên cứ liệu văn bản diễn thuyết của Mỹ)./ Nguyễn Thị Như Ngọc
// Ngôn ngữ. 2014, Số 4 (299). 2014tr. 59-71. The paper analyzes the translations of metaphors from English into Vietnamese by comparing and contrasting the metaphors in American political speeches with their Vietnamese translation versions. As a result, a three-step procedure was set up to identify cross-domain mappings and relevant linguistic expressions, and four metaphor translation patterns in the view of cognitive linguistics. The research results and detailed illustrations with suggested translation help English majors, especially those of translation and interpreting specialization, to obtain sharp visions of how to apply the found patterns with appropriate transformations operatively and scientifically.
