This paper presents a contrastive analysis of about 3000 names of things in Chinese and Vietnamese. It has pointed out the similarities in names of things in both languages based on the number of syllables, ways of denomination, structures, and meanings. The paper also point out that, different from the Vietnamese people, Chinese people tend to focus on describing the location, origin, static and internal features of things; Chinese people’s reference points are more human-oriented using typical constructions such as “size+type”, semi-affixes, auxiliary constructions and euphemism in naming things. In naming things which are not familiar to the Chinese culture, Chinese people tend to translate the meanings or create words of their own to describe the features of foreign entity.
