It has been recognized since long time ago the important role of Vietnamese in the teaching and learning practices at school. However, we are not happy with the existing results. In this paper, we ask and try to give answers to the following questions: Why are our students’ Vietnamese competencies still so poor? How will the Vietnamese curriculum after 2015 be different from the current curriculum and how will these changes impact the teaching and learning of Vietnamese? What strategies should we adopt for the teaching and learning of Vietnamese in the coming period? What will be the roles of the faculty of arts and teachers’ training colleges in teaching Vietnamese?
