In both written and spoken discourse in English, such little words or short phrases as Well, Oh, So, Additionally, In fact, Consequently, You know, I think… are usually used between utterances. They are considered special linguistic units because of their forms and functions. In nature, they are not language units that “describe”, “modify” or “refer to” anything. Rather, they are “discourse markers” used to mark cohesion and/or modality meaning. In the paper, the author tries to take an overiew of the positions and approaches by five English language researchers, namely, Randolph Quirk et al, M.A.K Halliday and Hasan, Deborah Schiffrin, Diane Blakemore and Bruce Fraser of this original linguistic phenomenon.
