// 语言教学与研究 2013, 第5卷 (163) 北京 : 北京语言大学语言研究所, 2013.tr. 10-18 Presenting the order of the multifunctional Mandarin word "dao (到)" as a case study, this paper probes into the application of semantic map model into the study of second language acquisition. Semantic maps of morpheme "arriving" in Mandarin, Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese can be depicted based on the synchronic and chronic materials from cross-language (include cross-dialect) comparisons. Then we examined and compared the order of acquisition of "dao" between Japanese, Korean and Vietnamese students, identified and offered possible explainations. Semantic map model has proved to be applicable to the study of second language acquisition concerning multifunctional words.
