The translation of English personal pronouns into Vietnamese has always piqued the translators’, readers’ and researchers’ interests. The same English personal pronoun can be rendered into different Vietnamese personal pronouns. In the translation of “The Hottest Night of the Century”, four different ways of translating the English third person personal pronoun “he” have been provided: “ông”, “ông ta”, “nó”, and “thầy”. Other personal pronouns have been translated in a similar manner. So, what is the translator’s implication? What is the basis for his choice of Vietnamese personal pronouns? This paper intends to elaborate varied ways of translating the same English personal pronoun into Vietnamese from linguistic pragmatics approaches.
