Academic English writing studies,both international and domestic,have been developing rapidly since 1980 sin three areas,i.e.,EAP writing studies with the approach of systemic functional linguistics,EAP writing studies with the approach of academic literacies,and reflections about research paradigms of the field per se.Covering all the three areas,the international studies have gained marked achievements,in particular,important concepts are defined,and analytical frameworks created and modified;agreater variety of research objects is investigated;and research foci are undergoing a shift from macro to specific.Compared with the international studies,the development of domestic research is behind for about nine years,with more focus on text but less on process.The field in general presents some problems related to the interface of research paradigms,application of theories to data analysis,and a lack of innovative studies domestically.

The Sydney Grammar of the Systemic Functional Linguistics believes that English prepositional phrase complexes can be divided into paratactic and hypotactic ones according to the interdependent relationship. This research revisits the hypotactic prepositional phrase complex and finds out that there is no such a structure as "hypotactic prepostional phrase complex" in English. The so-called "hypotactic prepositional phrase complex" can be treated in two different ways. One is a single group or a single prepositional phrase with embedding. The other is two independent prepositional phrases, each of which can function as an adjunct in a clause. New types of adjuncts are henceforth identified. This finding echos the proposal of Cardiff Grammar that from the perspective of recursion there is no hypotaxis but only co-ordination and embedding at the rank of clauses and leads to the claim that neither is there hypotaxis at the rank of prepositional phrases.

Confining the definition of the Finite to the interpersonal metafunction by Systemic Functional Linguistics(SFL)results in the following problems:the Primary Tense/Modality system is defined against its distinction from the Finite,the subjectivity of modality is inconsistently described,the fusion of the Finite with the Predicator is neglected and the finite status of lexical verbs be/have is problematically defined,the Finite in the unrealistic clauses is not adequately covered,and Huddleston’s(1988)query of"Subject responsible for the proposition"is not satisfactorily answered.By a re-description of the Finite system,this paper finds that the Finite helps to build the speaker’s interpersonal subjectivity,construes the degree of participant’s ideational participation by means of construing the involvement degree in the actualization of the process,and foregrounds the textual process.The functions of the Finite require higher grammaticalization and make it necessary to distinguish the interpersonal subject from the ideational subject
