In foreign language pedagogy, role play is known as a flexible, effective teaching method that improves not only learner’s speaking skill but also others. However, role-play still has its own shortcomings when being applied in typical learning environments. Besides, each learner may have different responses to and experiences of this method. The article, first, reviews fundamental knowledge of role play in teaching foreign languages, then briefly describes a small-scale survey conducted by the writer with the support of teachers and international students in Italian courses of University for Foreigners of Perugia. It aims to explore the viewpoints of learners of Italian on role play and its effects on them, thence, improves teachers’ use. A similar recent survey focuses on Vietnamese learners, particularly students at the Italian Department of Hanoi University. This serves as an initial step to the writer’s deeper research on role play with a goal of facilitating Italian teaching in Vietnam.
