Étude contrastive de quelques connecteurs formés sur le verbe dire en français et en japonais : Ceci dit, cela dit, to-wa-ie et to-itte-mo / Jun-ya Watanabe
// Langages Nº 220 (4/2020) Paris : Armand Colin, 2020p.21-42 I discuss the function of connectors ceci dit and cela dit on one hand, to-wa-ie and to-itte-mo on the other, in a contrastive approach in French and in Japanese. Ceci dit and cela dit have three uses in common: (i) temporal use which introduces a description of extralinguistic actions in the subsequent; (ii) argumentative use which the subsequent works as a reserve with reference to the antecedent; (iii) use without explicit subsequent. I assume the diachronical changes of meaning from (i) to (ii) and from (i) to (iii); the change from (i) to (ii) can be called pragmaticalization and constructionalization. In Japanese, unlike the case of ceci dit and cela dit, no gradual change to the argumentative use is attested for to-wa-ie and to-itte-mo, which seem pragmaticalized from the beginning of their history. One of the reasons for this is that these Japanese connectors have recourse to the postpositions which disambiguate them.
