tr. 35-47

Honorifics in Japanese are terms, expressions which show respect, courtesy, humility, politeness. People can distinguish the levels of relations with others in communication through the use of honorifics. Using honorifics or not relates not only to the expression of deference or social status, but also to other factors such as intimacy-etiquette, uchi-soto (inside-outside relationship)... This article presents an overview of honorific speech in Japanese; the relationship between honorifics and grammar, honorifics and writing style; and the composition and classification of honorifics in Japanese.
