This paper examines the mightiness and expansion effect of the Chinese verb-tendency construction from the perspective of Linguistic Inventory Typology.First,it is argued that the verb-tendency construction is the dominant inventory form of path expression in Chinese.Then the expansion of the verb-tendency construction is analyzed on the synchronic level,with the prototypical meaning of path process as the starting point.It is indicated that there are both internal and external expansion,and that external expansion can reach as far as the resultative category and the aspectual category while producing some more lexicalized forms.Finally,with cross-linguistic comparison,the paper examines the mightiness degree of the verb-tendency construction in Chinese.
