John Robert Morrison’s rendering of "Superintendent" into" 领事 "in the Treaty of Nanking has been called into question lately. This paper argues however that his translation is solidly grounded in the changed situation since the East India Company’s trade monopoly in China was ended and the British government started to appoint a Superintendent of Trade to China. The controversy over the rendition of this term highlights the importance of a firm grasp of the historical background and related documents in diachronic studies of translation.
