Within the framework of Systemic Functional Linguistics, this study explores verb reduplications in modern Chinese in order to reveal their semantic and syntactic functions. First of all, the study points out that verb reduplications refer to those linguistic phenomena involving the recurrence of verbs, and expressing related meanings around the verb. According to the way that verbs are reduplicated, verb reduplications can be classified into eight types. Secondly, observing the principle that language has three metafunctions, the study argues that all the former verbs in verb reduplications manifest the experimental meaning, and all the latter ones suggest the experimental, interpersonal and textual meanings together. But it is worth mentioning that for latter verbs in verb reduplications, one meaning comes into prominence in a certain context while the rest are implications. Thirdly, the study shows that verb reduplications have their internal structures. Former verbs function as the Predicator element of the clause, and latter verbs as the Predicator Extension.
