Tóm tắt In this paper, with the purpose of contributing to the study and teaching of Japanese verbs, we have carried out a survey o¬n Japanese transitive and intransitive verbs with the data from "Bottchan" by the famous Japanese writer, Natsume Souseki. We filtered out 1,555 verbs in dictionary form in 6,582 contexts, and 1330 verbs of which have Japanese descent. We found that in the case of the verbs with Japanese descent, transitive verbs are more frequently used than intransitive verbs. Among the intransitive verbs in use, relative verbs outnumber absolute verbs but among the transitive verbs in use, absolute verbs outnumber relative verbs. We also analysed such typical verbs in specific cases as "~ o iu", "[hito] ga aru" ,and the corresponding pair of “deru" and "dasu " to clarify their use in different contexts, compare with what is discussed in linguistic theory research and language textbooks, identify the differences from the approaches in language textbooks so as to offer theoretical support to language teachers and to further understand the important distinction between transitive and intransitive verbs in Japanese.
