| The Chinese character"副"is rich and complex in meaning and high in frequency of use in Chinese technical terminology. It can be used as an adjective, noun or classifier. It can appear at the beginning, middle and end of a term. The technical meanings of"副"are developed out of its traditional meanings such as "deputy", "mi-nor", "pair" as well as their extended meanings. In translating"副", English prefixes and words can be employed and sometimes it need not be translated. Some terms with"副"may each have several English equivalents which are different from each other in grammar, usage and scope of use. | |
