This study investigates Korean students’ acquisition of conjunctive relations in Chinese by comparing their results in a cartoon story-telling task with those of Chinese native speakers. The research shows that native Chinese speakers tend to use adverbs to link clauses whereas Korean students are more likely to use conjunctives. The three conjunctions most frequently used by Korean students are suoyi, danshi and ranhou, which greatly differ from native Chinese speakers. In the advanced students’ discourse, the frequency of suoyi and danshi declines whereas that of adverb jiurises, although there are still differences when compared with native Chinese speakers.

Repetitive and alternative use of multiple causal and transitional markers is a very common phenomena in Korean students’ oral discourse.Based on a comparison between the spoken data of Korean students and Chinese native speakers,we reveal the differences in their use of causal and transitional markers and propose the concept of"Chain Discourse"to highlight the usage feature of Korean students. We then use the RST theory to analyze the typical errors in the"Chain Discourse"and explore the reasons for the quantity limitation on these markers from three aspects:the semantic, cognitive and discourse structure. Finally,we conclude that the errors can be attributed to negative L1 transfer, classroom teaching and teaching materials,as well as cognition in general. It is suggested that more attention should be paid to marker ellipsis during the course of teaching.
