This paper investigated conceptual metaphors of “fire” in American and Vietnamese 20th century poetry. Then, it found out some similarities and differences in conceptual metaphors of “fire” in the two languages. Moreover, this research hopes to be an inspiration to those who are interested in conceptual metaphour in poetry, especially those of fire.

The semantic field of fire in Vietnamese has been classified into subfileds and groups. Then, we compare each with others with others and explain their different frequencies. The results show the richness of the semantic system of Vietnamese vocabulary as well as the hierarchy and systematicality in languages in general and Vietnamese in particular.
